Where there is light, there is hope to build a brighter future

Dear ~Contact.FirstName~,
Welcome to the first AIDF newsletter of 2016! We hope you enjoyed a relaxing and fulfilling holiday season.
This newsletter coincides with the launch of the AIDF infographic on humanitarian aid and development in Sub-Saharan East Africa. The infographic covers four key areas: food security, refugees, WASH and mobile for development. Each week one of the areas will be revealed and published on our website, don’t miss out - stay tuned and @FollowAIDF.
At the start of the New Year, we’d like to underline the current refugee and migrant crisis, which is the worst since the end of the Second World War with over 60 million forcibly displaced people. Governments and the humanitarian community unite to produce effective responses, as the need to understand the root causes behind such levels of displacement is greater than ever.
NRS International, together with its subsidiary Flexiway Solar Solutions, are providing access to solar light and energy during emergencies and have made a significant contribution to improving the lives of those most in need.
Over the past year Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone and has been officially removed from the Polio endemic list by WHO. B Medical and Prezzo Shed Investment Limited have contributed to addressing child mortality and transmission of polio virus in the country by supplying Solar Direct Drive refrigerators used to increase routine immunization coverage rates.
Lastly, we are pleased to announce that registration has opened for the AIDF Asia Summit 2016 taking place on 21-22 June at the UNCC Bangkok. In case you have missed last year's event, watch our highlights video in the AIDF Video Library.
Kind regards,
AIDF Team

[infographic] Food Security in Sub-Saharan East Africa
The AIDF has released an infographic that explores humanitarian aid and development in Sub-Saharan East Africa. Food security is the focus of this week's infographic as Sub-Saharan East Africa has scored one of the lowest regional rankings in the Global Food Security Index, with an overall score that is just two-thirds that of the Asia and Pacific region.

Understanding and addressing root causes of displacement
While a large number of people are driven away from their houses due to numerous conflicts in the Middle East and Africa, in other places, like Asia, floods, storms, cyclones and droughts are destroying people’s households. There were 60 million people displaced by conflict and violence by the end of 2014, which has reached levels of the Second World War.

Addressing child mortality and transmission of polio virus in Nigeria
Low routine immunization coverage rates remain a major problem in Nigeria. Over 40% of under-5 years old deaths in the country are attributable to vaccine preventable diseases. Unless drastic measures are taken to improve coverage of routine immunization urgently, Nigeria cannot adequately reduce child mortality or accelerate progress towards the achievement of MDG 4 goal.

"The AIDF summit has been so far fantastic and it has been held in a superb environment.
The UNCC is a superb location with all the facilities required. It is ideally located and assessable for all the UN staff and the associated NGO’s.
As a company we have met loads of influential key people within the market sector that we work in, so in so many aspects it has been fantastic."

"I think AIDF summit is very good summit and has brought together very different stakeholders across government, UN agencies, private sector & NGO’s into one platform to discuss the frontier developments in addressing disaster reduction and other sustainable development agendas. Going forward UN will come with sustainable development and what we are discussing in the meeting that AIDF has organised is how especially the Asia Pacific region and South East Asia can prepare for achieving sustainable development goals that the UN will be bringing in September."
